Parents/Carers

Moving from school to college is a big step, and we aim to work in partnership with parents and carers to ensure that each student makes a smooth transition and has the best possible experience at Lewisham College.

Lewisham College offers a very different environment for young adults with students given more independence and responsibility than they may have been used to in school. We help to prepare them for the world beyond college, whether that is employment, apprenticeships or going on to higher level study, by supporting them to develop self-motivation, time management, communication and teamworking skills.

Lewisham College offers three main routes for 16-18-year olds:

  • Vocational courses 500 Internal Server Error

If you have any queries or concerns as a parent or carer, please contact us. You can also view the wide range of Student Support and Learner Support we have available on this website from the main menu.

  • Supporting your child at College

As a parent or carer, you can support your child to fulfil their potential at college in a number of ways:

    • Good attendance
Aiming for 100% attendance and getting to College on time are vital to every student’s success and we rely on parents and carers to support us with this. We monitor students’ attendance and inform parents and carers if their child is missing or regularly late for classes. If your child is unable to attend College for any reason, please call 020 3757 3000 or contact their tutor by email preferably by midday on each day of absence. See our term dates.
    • Independent study
You can help by ensuring there’s a quiet space at home where your child can complete homework and assignments, and revise for exams.
    • Monitoring progress
We encourage parents and carers to attend our regular progress evenings where you can come along with your child to find out how they are doing, discuss any issues, and talk about their next steps. You will also receive a report on your child’s progress every term.
  • English and maths

Achieving English and maths qualifications is important for every student.

If your child has not achieved English and maths GCSE at grade 4 (C) or above before coming to Lewisham College, they will study these subjects alongside their chosen vocational course, sitting exams in order to gain the English and maths qualifications they need.

We ask parents and carers to remind students of the importance of attending their exams, arriving at least half an hour before the start of each exam with the necessary materials.
